There’s been this faint whine coming from the front of my A3 for about a week now, only really noticeable at low speeds and it goes away once I’m cruising, so I’ve been telling myself it’s nothing. But it’s definitely getting slightly louder and my neighbour, who knows a bit about cars, reckons it could be a pulley or something with the belt rather than the engine itself. I’ve been putting off getting it looked at because I don’t want to walk into a garage and get talked into a whole list of things I don’t need. Someone suggested I learn more before booking anything so I at least know what questions to ask, which sounds sensible. Has anyone had a similar noise and what did it turn out to be? Also is it the kind of thing that gets worse fast, because if it’s going to fail on Sheikh Zayed Road I’d rather deal with it this week.
