GuestThis has turned into a small family debate at my house, so I thought I would ask people who own the same kind of car. I drive a Range Rover Sport, five years old, and every morning my father in law watches me start it and pull away right after, and then he shakes his head like I did something wrong. He says in his time you always let the engine run for five minutes before moving, otherwise you damage it slowly. I told him modern cars are not like that, but he does not believe me, and honestly I am not fully sure myself. My neighbor does the opposite. He starts his car and leaves in ten seconds, even in winter, and his engine is fine after many years. A friend at work said the best way is to wait about thirty seconds and then drive gently until the needle moves, because idling too long wastes fuel and the engine actually warms up faster when it is working a little. That sounded reasonable, but then someone else told me that heavy cars like ours with a big engine are different. While reading about it one evening, I saw a post where a man said a Range Rover Repair garage once told him the first minute matters most because the oil needs time to reach every part, and that the real mistake is pushing hard on a cold engine, not driving off slowly. That made more sense to me than either side of my family. Still, I want to hear from real owners. Does the turbo, if your car has one, need a different habit? Is it true that you should also let it idle for a short time before switching off after a long fast drive? I also wonder about the air conditioner, because in the summer I turn it on straight away and drive, and my wife says that is bad for the engine. Is she right? And what about the gearbox, does it need a little time too, or is that just a myth? If you have a morning routine that you trust, please tell me what it is and why. Easy words are best for me. Thanks for reading.
